APS Remuneration Data 31 December 2023
Each year the Australian Public Service Commission collects remuneration data from all agencies with employees engaged under the Public Service Act 1999.
This data release highlights headline remuneration trends based on data collected from APS agencies as at 31 December 2023. A full set of data tables is available at Appendix 3.
Valid data was received for 165,882 APS employees. This includes 3,210 Senior Executive Service (SES) employees and 162,672 non-SES employees. Total headcount increased by 16,226 (or 10.8%) compared to December 2022 when it was 149,656. This is in line with the increase in APS headcount reported in the 31 December 2023 APS Employment Data Release, which is available from the APSC website: APS Employment Data 31 December 2023.
For information on employees included in this report refer to APS 2023 Remuneration Survey Guide and Data Specifications.
The data is presented using the classification system outlined in the Public Service Classifications Rules 2000. A number of agencies use local classifications in addition to the approved APS classifications. Remuneration data for local classifications has been assigned to the corresponding APS classification for the purposes of this report.
Note: The 2023 APS remuneration data, initially released on 7 August 2024, has been revised resulting in minor changes to some Total Remuneration Package and Total Reward percentiles and averages for the 2023 reporting year. The updates are primarily due to the correction of SES superannuation amounts after one agency identified an error in its superannuation data. These changes had a small impact on the median percentage movement for SES Total Remuneration Package and Total Reward from 2022 to 2023. Updated data tables are available at Appendix 3.
