The APS HR Professional Stream led two networking events across Queensland in May, with an event in Brisbane on Wednesday 14 May, and an event in Townsville on Thursday 15 May, with over 180 HR specialist in attendance across both sites. Designed to bring practitioners together to network and hear from HR Professionals and HR senior leaders on topical matters, these events also provide the opportunity for network members to engage with one another and participate in panel discussions.

Deputy Commissioner ATO People, Alison Stott, hosted both events on behalf of Jacqui Curtis, Head of the APS HR Profession. Alison shared that more than 85% of HR practitioners in the APS are members of the member network, a group that is now made up of more than 6,000 professionals. She reinforced the power of networks with the HR profession, highlighting that it opens doors to new opportunities, fosters professional growth and is building a supportive community of like-minded individuals who can offer guidance, collaboration in inspiration. Alison closed her opening remarks by sharing an update on the three key priorities of the APS HR Professional Stream for 2025: Developing HR foundational skills and capabilities, Identifying and developing HR future leaders, and Developing HR data and analytics.
In Brisbane, Alison hosted a panel discussion between:
- Cassie Haynes, First Assistant Secretary, People Services and Wellbeing, Department of Defence;
- Mark le Dieu, Deputy Commissioner Corporate, Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission; and
- Rod Francisco, AHRI State President of Queensland.

For the panel discussion in Townsville, Alison and Rod were joined by Sally Martin, General Manager, Wellbeing and HR Support Division, Services Australia.
Panel member discussions explored the broad experience of each of our panellists and focused on key themes of leadership at all levels, stewardship and integrity. Audience questions encouraged a thoughtful exploration of collaboration, managing risk and maintaining balance.
