The Centre of Excellence for Workforce Planning has recently completed a strategic review of the APS Job Family Framework, which helps us understand the types of work being done across the APS. As part of this initiative, agencies are encouraged to ensure accurate reporting of job family data to the Australian Public Service Commission (APSC).
Job family data is submitted through the APS Employment Database (APSED) during the biannual snapshots on 30 June and 31 December. While reporting is not mandatory, reporting this information is strongly encouraged – especially for the upcoming 31 December reporting period.
Following updates to the Framework, agencies will need to review their mapping to the new APS job codes. Regular reviews are recommended to ensure the data accurately reflects the nature of work within each agency.
Why is this important? Job family data gives a clearer picture of the work being done across the APS. It helps:
- support key reports like the annual State of the Service Report and the APS Remuneration Survey
- enable APSED to provide agencies with useful insights into their workforce makeup
- strengthen strategic workforce planning by showing the kind of jobs that exist in the APS and how they are changing over time.
Now is a great time to check your agency’s approach and get ready for the December reporting deadline. For help or advice, visit the APS Job Family Framework page or contact the Centre of Excellence for Workforce Planning at APSWFP@apsc.gov.au.
