To celebrate the heart of the workplace, the APS HR Professional Stream partnered with the ACT AHRI Council to deliver an International HR Day event. Held at Old Parliament House, HR professionals across the ACT had the opportunity to hear from the Head of the HR Profession, Senior HR leaders and HR graduate alumni.
AHRI ACT State President, Paula Goodwin, hosted the event which opened with a keynote from the Australian Public Service Commissioner, Dr Gordon de Brouwer.
Jacqui Curtis, Head of the HR Profession, then facilitated a panel discussion of:
- Melanie French, Executive Director, People and Capability, YMCA Canberra
- Cassie Haynes, First Assistant Secretary, Department of Defence
- Brooke Ison, Employment Policy, 2024 Graduate Alumni, Australian Taxation Office
- Scott Keane, Assistant Commissioner, Workplace Relations, Australian Taxation Office
- Ros Tregurtha, Chief People Officer, PentenAmio.
The panel discussion opened with insights and perspectives on the qualities of leadership excellence at all levels and the importance of International HR Day to each of the speakers. During the discussion, attendees heard views from the panel on how workplace design can support a dynamic workplace and workforce, strategies for employee wellbeing, and the importance of lifelong learning. In addition, panellists spoke to how HR can best prepare for shifts that result from the increasing use of AI in the workplace, and the leadership qualities considered essential for successfully navigating this.
Following the panel discussion, guests heard from Faye Liu, Assistant Commissioner, Craft and Learning, Australian Public Service Commission about the APS Academy and the ‘building a speak up culture in the APS’ project promoting integrity in the APS.
The event was a great way to bring HR professional professionals from both the public and private sector together connect and celebrate International HR Day.
