The APSC’s Centre of Excellence for Workforce Planning recently completed a major update to the APS Job Family Framework to improve clarity, usability, and alignment with Occupation Standard Classification for Australia (OSCA).
The Framework groups jobs based on similar tasks and helps agencies:
- understand their workforce
- identify key roles and risks
- benchmark against the wider economy
- plan for future workforce needs.
As part of the update, the Centre of Excellence for Workforce Planning team looked at how agencies are using the current Framework and worked closely with a range of stakeholders, including the ABS, Jobs and Skills Australia, APS Professions and the APSC.
The changes include:
- renaming and merging job families
- updating roles
- aligning categories with OSCA
- updating job functions for clearer groupings.
Currently, only about half of agencies report their job family data through the Australian Public Service Employment Database (APSED). This new update is a great reason to start. The Framework helps human resource professionals in the APS plan for the workforce of the future and inform whole of service strategies.
