APS Digital Professional Stream
The Digital Profession was launched as part of the Digital Professional Stream to lift the digital expertise of the APS workforce. As a peak body, it will professionalise the digital workforce in the public sector. By joining the Digital Profession, members will have access to career and skill development opportunities. It will expand the expertise of individuals, teams and agencies, and help create leaders with a mindset to create innovation and cultural change in the workplace.
Membership to the Digital Profession is open to digital professionals and leaders working across the APS and Commonwealth. These are not just workers in ‘traditional‘ IT and ICT roles, but also individuals who actively applies digital skills, methodology and technology to design, build and/or maintain digital government products and services. It also describes a mindset: a practitioner who has a strong interest in using digital to improve these products and services for the Australian community.
Benefits of joining the Digital Profession
The Digital Profession can help an APS employee to grow and advance their digital career. By joining the Digital Profession, individuals join a community of peers to learn from, collaborate with and mentor – a diverse group from across government. Individuals will also have access to tools as the APS Career Pathfinder to make deliberate and informed decisions about their digital careers.
For teams and agencies
The Digital Profession work with teams and agencies lift their digital capability by helping to recruit for core digital roles. This can be at entry level (through the Emerging Talent apprentice, cadet and graduate programs) or at senior executive level, by embedding digital leaders in the recruitment process to help select the right talent for digital transformation. There are also mobility opportunities, allowing temporary placements that will see teammates return with new expertise and skills.
The professional careers of APS digital practitioners are a high priority.

The Digital Profession will have several memberships levels to serve the range of career needs and expertise of the community.
About the APS Digital Professional Stream
On Thursday 30 April 2020 the Australian Public Service (APS) Digital Professional Stream was formally launched by the Australian Public Service Commissioner, Peter Woolcott. In his capacity as the overarching Head of Professions, the Commissioner announced the appointment of Randall Brugeaud, Chief Executive Officer of the Digital Transformation Agency (DTA), as the Digital Head of Profession. The launch of the Digital Professional Stream follows the successful launch of the APS HR Professional Stream in late 2019.
The Digital Professional Stream Strategy has been developed through a senior reference group. This group is Chaired by the CEO of the DTA and made up of key Chief Information Officers from the departments of Home Affairs and Defence, the Australian Taxation Office, and Services Australia, and representatives from the departments of the Prime Minister and Cabinet and Finance. The aim of the Strategy is to lift the digital expertise of the APS workforce to meet long-term capability needs to transform government services.
