It’s simple!

Submit your application online by 11:59 pm on 1 July 2018. Late applications will not be accepted.

Application Form

As part of your application, you will need to provide a completed application form which includes:

  • Personal details
  • One page pitch
  • Your school transcript and/or qualification certificate

Your school transcript or qualification certificate will be used to ensure you have completed the equivalent of a year 12 certificate or higher within the last five years. Grades and time spent studying will not be taken into account.

Please note that you do not need to provide evidence of disability at this stage, however will be required to provide evidence of disability to your employing agency if made an offer of employment.

If you are unable to submit your application online, please contact us as soon as possible.

One page pitch

Please provide us with a written pitch of no more than one page.

The one page pitch should introduce yourself and talk about your skills, attributes and individual characteristics that will allow you to succeed in a Trainee position within the Australian Public Service (APS). Your pitch should be in line with the APS 2-3 work level standards, and drawn on experience and transferable skills to demonstrate:

  • Your motivation to contribute to and deliver the outcomes of the APS
  • Your ability to work in various environments

We will keep asking you about whether you need any adjustments at each stage of the recruitment process.

What to expect next

The NextStep team will let you know whether or not your application has progressed to the next stage of the assessments. We will contact you via your preferred method of contact listed in your application form. If you want to be contacted via another method, please contact us to let us know.

Please note the key dates for NextStep. If you progress through the assessment stages you will need to make sure you are available on the dates indicated. Face to face discussions will be held in most capital cities.

If you are successful through NextStep you will commence in your employing agency in November 2018.

Applying for NextStep and GradAccess?

If you have completed the equivalent of an Australian undergraduate degree or higher in the last five years and you meet the eligibility requirements for NextStep, you can apply for NexStep and GradAccess at the same time. Simply tick ‘applying for both GradAccess and NextStep’ on your application form.

The GradAccess and NextStep application process is the same, so you will only have to participate in one assessment process for both programs.
