Modernising the public sector

As part of the public sector, we are operating in a rapidly changing global environment. The population is growing and so is demand for government services.

To adapt to this changing environment, the APS Reform Committee is working with Secretaries to oversee efforts to modernise the public sector. The initiatives are designed to provide benefits now and in the future for public servants, citizens and business.

The APS Reform Committee comprises of Departmental Secretaries, the APS Commissioner and heads of agencies.

Key reform initiatives are occurring across six work streams:

  • citizen and business engagement
  • investment and resourcing
  • policy, data and innovation
  • structure and operating model
  • workforce and culture
  • productivity.

The Prime Minister recently announced the Independent Review of the Public Service. The Review is a key part of modernising the public sector. It will focus on the longer term to ensure the APS remains fit for purpose for the coming decades. The APS reform program will ensure our reform activities align to that vision.

More information about modernising the public sector is available in the Preface to 2018-19 Budget Paper No. 4.
