While the ACT has the largest number of APS employees, most work in other parts of Australia.
- Almost 2 in 5 APS employees were located in the ACT in December 2017—38%.
- Almost one-fifth of the workforce was in NSW, at 19%, and a further 17% work in Victoria.
- Nearly 1,400 APS staff, or 0.9%, worked overseas; most of these are employed by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

- Just over 14% of the APS workforce was located in regional areas of Australia at 31 December 2017—that is, outside capital cities. This has grown from 12% in 2012 (Figure 7).
