It pays to learn what you can claim at tax time

The ATO has produced a guide for public servants to consider when claiming deductions. The guide covers the most common deductions made by public servants, although we encourage you to check out the ATO website if you need more specific information.

If in doubt, remember the three golden rules when claiming deductions for work-related expenses:

-    you must have spent the money yourself and not have been reimbursed,

-  the expense must be directly related to earning your income,

-  you must have a record to prove it.

This is part of a broader suite of guides produced for a range of occupations, including the Defence forces and police officers. The guides are a tool to support the ATO’s focus on helping people to get their deductions right this tax time. Why not test your knowledge with the ATO’s quiz?

The myDeductions tool in the ATO app can help make keeping records easier, and at tax time you can send your deductions to your tax agent or upload them directly to myTax.

All guides can be downloaded from the  ATO publication ordering service – search publications for JS39108_H. The guide is titled ‘Public Servants: A Guide to Claiming Work-Related Expenses’.
