The Australian Public Service (APS) Statistical Bulletin is a six-monthly statistical overview of the APS workforce employed under the Public Service Act 1999 (the PS Act).
This edition is based on snapshot data from 31 December 2017. It provides a broad overview of key workforce metrics as at 31 December 2017 and trends across the last decade (2007–2017) with relevant data tables referenced throughout.
This update highlights some key trends relevant to recent policy priorities such as; the size and structure of the APS, gender equality and other selected diversity data. A separate workbook is available for download, to provide the facility for HR and workforce planning practitioners to investigate the underlying data in detail.

The Australian Public Service Employment Database
Data for the Bulletin is sourced from the APS Employment Database (APSED) which was established in 1966 and is managed by the Australian Public Service Commission (APSC). The APSED data collection includes demographic details, classification (level) of APS positions, a range of diversity information, and key statistics related to staff movements: engagements, separations, promotions and transfers.
