Ian Fitzgerald

General Manager, People Policy and Operations Division
Department of Human Services

Ian Fitzgerald is the General Manager, People Policy and Operations Division, in the Department of Human Service (DHS). Between 2011 and 2016 he was the Chief Human Capital Officer (CHCO) at the Australian Public Service Commission (APSC). In his CHCO role he worked with APS colleagues and others to take a longer term view of Australia’s challenges and opportunities and the implications for leadership, workforce and agency capability in the Australian Public Service (APS). Ian was primarily responsible for setting up and overseeing a program of major capability reviews covering 23 APS departments and agencies. Ian was also responsible for the Strategic Centre for Leadership, Learning and Development which established the talent management and development processes required to build a strong pipeline of APS senior executives. This was overseen by the Secretaries Board. He has previously completed strategy assignments at DHS and Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). Prior to the APS Ian held senior management policy and delivery roles in criminal justice agencies in Australia and the UK. He also held senior management positions in Westpac for seven years. Ian is a PhD candidate at the Institute for Governance and Policy Analysis at the University of Canberra working in the field of political psychology. He has a BSc from the Australian National University and an MBA from Macquarie Graduate School of Management. He is a Fellow of the Australian Human Resources Institute. Outside of work Ian is consumed by children’s sporting activities, is a morning mountain runner and relaxes through the completion of unnecessary landscaping and building projects.


Peter Morris

Director Value Management Office
Australian Taxation Office

Peter served as an Army Officer for 25 years prior to joining the ATO in 2001. Within the ATO he has held a number of corporate management roles in governance, human resource management, and project management disciplines.  He currently has responsibility for the Value Management Office within the Australian Taxation Office Portfolio Management Branch. Peter has a Bachelor of Arts Degree and Master of Management Degree from the University of NSW, and a Graduate Diploma in Public Policy from Deakin University.


Shane Wilson

Director FEG, Policy Systems and Finance
Department of Employment

Shane Wilson joined the employment portfolio in April 2002. This represented his first experience of the Australian Public Service after stints as a primary school teacher in New South Wales, and an employment consultant for a disability employment agency in Canberra.

Shane has been a director since March 2005 and has worked in program management, operational policy and corporate functions. From 2013 to 2016, Shane was Director of the HR Policy, Metrics and SES Team in People Branch. During this time he worked on establishment activities for the department following the Machinery of Government change in September 2013. His current role is a program management role for the Fair Entitlements Guarantee program which he has occupied since March 2016.

Shane holds a Bachelor of Education (Special Education) and a Graduate Certificate in Public Sector Management.
