The Australian Public Service Commission hosted its first graduate event on Tuesday, 27 March at the National Convention Centre in Canberra. More than 540 of the Australian Public Service’s newest employees attended the event titled, A Taste of Government.

The event facilitator, Australian Public Service Deputy Commissioner, Ms Jenet Connell, welcomed the audience to the event and introduced Ms Jannette Phillips to perform the Welcome to Country on behalf of the Ngunnawal People.

The keynote presenter at the event was the Secretary, Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Dr Martin Parkinson AC PSM. In his speech, Dr Parkinson provided an overview of his career since he commenced in the Australian Public Service as a graduate. He also encouraged the graduates to seize opportunities, become leaders, embrace diversity, and emphasised the importance of integrity and creativity in the Australian Public Service.

Following the keynote presentation, Dr Parkinson was joined by The Hon. John Lloyd PSM, Australian Public Service Commissioner and Ms Rosemary Huxtable PSM, Secretary, Department of Finance in a panel discussion. Graduates posed their questions to the panel, covering topics such as the future of work and job security, change management, and mobility within the Australian Public Service.

The next graduate event, GradHack, will be held on 20 June 2018. For more information contact the Australian Public Service Commission’s events team on 02 6202 3916 or events@apsc.gov.au.
