The APSC’s Indigenous Capability Team is working with agencies to create an Indigenous executive talent pipeline with excELerate. This innovative career development program supports the progression of high-performing Indigenous employees at the APS 5–6 levels into senior roles.
Designed by leading Indigenous learning and development experts, excELerate adopts a contemporary approach to boost critical capabilities, experience, behaviours and personal attributes for advancement to Executive Level positions.
The program addresses issues of significance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people working in government. Topics include, Indigenous thought leadership, walking in two worlds and balancing cultural and professional agendas, unconscious bias and improving the cultural capability of managers through reverse mentoring.
The pilot program commenced in Canberra and Brisbane in June, with 43 participants from 22 Commonwealth agencies across the country.
Participants heard from Geoffrey Richardson, former SES officer, about the challenges of working on a broad range of Indigenous program and policy areas across government. His insights and strategies for thriving as an Indigenous manager and working to improve outcomes for his community inspired the group.
The program’s tailored approach includes individual career coaching sessions. The team of Indigenous coaches, all of whom have a wealth of experience in senior government roles, work with participants to help empower and guide them along their personal journey to success.
