Stories from the Service: a podcast about the APS - with Elsy Brammesan

Welcome to our podcast Stories from the Service. It's about the people who make up the Australian Public Service and the work they do for the Australian community.

These podcasts highlight the contribution that people in the APS make every day all over the country.

The first episode features Elsy Brammesan, Director of the Aged Care Compliance Centre at the Department of Health.

Elsy felt humbled and honoured when she found out she was receiving a Public Service Medal in the Australia Day 2019 Honours List.

She was acknowledged for outstanding public service in the protection of the health, welfare and interests of people living in aged care facilities.

In this podcast, Elsy describes what best practice aged care looks like: 'A day in aged care is made up of millions of happy moments.'
She has also had her share of challenging situations, including non-compliant aged care facilities.

‘As soon as I walked in I knew I had walked into a very dangerous situation. And I made a decision immediately that I’m not walking away from this,’ Elsy said.

Asked about her approach to leadership and management in the public service, Elsy suggests, 'you need to be hard on the issues and soft on the people'.
