Digital mental health gateway

It is the two-year anniversary since the launch of Head to Health – which aims to help people more easily access information, advice, and free or low-cost phone and online mental health services and treatment options which best suit their needs.

Head to Health is the result of an extensive co-design process between the Department of Health, people and families with a lived experience of mental health issues, as well as mental health organisations, service providers, health professionals and the community.

Head to Health contains over 400 useful websites, apps, online programs and community forums, as well as phone, chat and email services. If the user isn’t sure where to start, they can also use Sam the Chatbot. Sam provides tailored recommendations to best suit their needs.

Using the search page, Head to Health users can navigate to various resources and services if they’re experiencing mental health concerns, or trying to support someone else. Head to Health can provide information and support options to people with a variety of issues such as depression, anxiety or eating disorders.

Digital mental health services provide an opportunity to increase access to care, regardless of physical location, or concerns around stigma, privacy, and financial issues. They can be used as a complement or alternative to face-to-face therapies, allowing people to seek support in times of need, or when it is most convenient for them.

Better yet, services listed are government funded and are low cost or free to use.  Head to Health has been really well received, and has won a number of national and international industry awards, not only for its technical build, but also for its useful content, and for the comprehensive co-design process by which it was developed.

According to data from the 2017 National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing, each year 1 in 5 Australians aged 16-85 are estimated to experience a mental disorder. This is equivalent to 4 million Australians, based on the 2016 estimated population. Head to Health will continue play an important role to support the wellbeing of the Australian population.
