Countdown to the end of tax time

The countdown is on to the end of tax time and the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is encouraging APS staff who haven't lodged their tax return to do so now, or contact your tax agent before 31 October.

By now, most of your information from employers, banks, government agencies, health funds and other third parties should be pre-filled in your return, making it easy to lodge online. Remember you are responsible for the information in it, so make sure you check what has been pre-filled and add anything that is missing.

Most income tax returns lodged online take two weeks to process, however some lodgments require manual processing and may take longer. Incorrect bank account details are a common reason refunds are delayed. Check your bank account details carefully before you lodge, either in ATO online services through myGov or with your tax agent. To make sure you don't miss out on any deductions, check what work-related expenses you can claim by reading the ATO occupation guides at ato.gov.au/occupations.

You can lodge online with myTax or check the progress of your return using ATO online services through myGov. If you’re using a registered agent, ensure you contact them before 31 October to get on their special lodgment schedule.
