The Australian Public Service (APS) Statistical Bulletin is a bi-annual statistical overview of the APS workforce employed under the Public Service Act 1999 (the PS Act).
Over the last decade the APS has experienced structural and demographic changes in areas such as employees working part-time, the number of employees at lower classification levels and the age profile of the workforce.
The proportion of Indigenous employees and those from non-English speaking backgrounds (NESB) compare favourably to the previous decade.
37.9% of the APS are based in the ACT and comprise over a quarter of the ACT labour force1. The next highest populations are in NSW which has 18.9% of the APS, of which 6% are in regional areas, and Victoria which has 16.8%, of which 2.8% are in regional areas.
Employees in Commonwealth-owned companies, statutory authorities, the Australian Defence Force and government business enterprises who are not employed under the PS Act are not included. State and local government employees are also not included.
Agencies covered by the PS Act can be broadly placed into 4 categories
Employees of indented organisations are included in the employment numbers of their portfolio Department in the tables of this Bulletin.
