Applying for jobs in the APS

This page is: current

The APS is one of Australia's biggest employers. We have careers to suit  just about anyone at all stages of life—from school leavers and graduates  looking to start in the workforce through to senior executives and  professionals who shape the future of Australia.

All current vacancies in the Australian Public Service (APS) for a period of more than 12  months are advertised online at APSjobs.

Positions  can also be advertised on individual agency websites and jobseeker sites.

If you are interested in working for a particular government body, check  their website for information. You can find out more about APS agencies at:

Researching a job

If you see an interesting job advertised, you can find more information in the selection documentation or from the agency's website. What does it do? Can you imagine yourself working there? Is it a match for your qualifications and experience?

Call the contact person

All job advertisements will give details for a Contact Officer. The Contact Officer is the best person to speak to if you want to know more information about the job, and whether you may be suitable for it.

They can also tell you more about the assessment process and the work environment. Some questions you may want to ask are: What tasks the job actually involves e.g. project work, public contact, outdoor work, writing or research. Who are the clients? Who will you report to? Who will you be working with? What are the opportunities for career development? What's the team like?
