Section 4 – Movements of ongoing staff

During the year to June 2009, there were 12,963 engagements and 10,460 separations of ongoing employees in the APS. An engagement refers to an employee joining the APS, not moving from one agency to another. A separation refers to an employee leaving the APS, not moving from one agency to another.

Engagements fell by 19.3%, from 16,067 during 2007–08 to 12,963 during 2008–09. This was the third consecutive year that engagement numbers had fallen. The number of separations fell by 14.1%. Engagements continue to outnumber separations, a trend evident since 1999-00.
