During the year to June 2008, there were 15,790 engagements and 11,946 separations of ongoing staff in the APS. An engagement refers to an employee joining the APS, not moving from one agency to another. A separation refers to an employee leaving the APS, not moving from one agency to another.
During 2007–08 engagements fell by 18.7%, while separations rose by 13.8%. This was mainly due to increases in resignations (up by 909 or 11.8%), age retirements (up by 429 or 29.4%) and retrenchments (up by 132 or 20.0%). Engagements continue to outnumber separations, a trend evident since 1999-00.
