At 30 June 2004 there were 131,522 staff in the APS. This total comprised:

• 122,102 ongoing staff (up by 1.6% from June 2003)
• 9,420 non-ongoing staff (down by 18.1% from June 2003).

During 2003-04:

• 9,097 ongoing employees were engaged (down by 39.9% from 15,130 in 2002-03)
• 7,187 ongoing employees separated from the APS (7,181 in 2002-03)
• 233 ongoing employees moved into coverage of the PS Act.
