LENGTH OF SERVICE

At June 2004, the median length of service for ongoing employees was eight years. Men have a median length of service of nine years compared with six for women. Figure 2.15 shows the profile of length of service over the 10 years to June 2004.

The rise in the number of staff with fewer than five years service, from 24,173 at June 1998 to 47,829 at June 2003, reflects the increase in engagements over this period. The number fell slightly to 47,379 at June 2004 after a fall in engagements during the past year. As a proportion of total ongoing staff, those with fewer than five years service has risen from less than one-quarter at June 1998 (22.3%) to over one-third at June 2004 (38.8%).
