Regulatory Practice for SES

Regulatory practice for SES is presented by the Australian Public Service Commission, in association with the Australian National University.
When should governments regulate and when should they stand back? If they are going to regulate, what options are available and how should we choose between them? In consulting with stakeholders about regulatory change, what works best?
Programme overview
- The regulatory environment is rapidly evolving. This course examines the cutting edge of regulatory theory and practice.
- New challenges like climate change mean new regulatory roles for government while existing infrastructure provisions deliver heated debates about the relative merits of public, private and hybrid regulatory structures.
- This programme is designed for policy-makers who work at the interface between the theory of best practice, evidence-based policy, and real world situations in which there may be limited data and decisions need to be made in a timely manner.
Participant benefits
- develop insights and strategies for better practices in developing and administering regulatory policies in government
- enhance your understanding of the traditional and emerging themes in regulatory theory, particularly new analyses of the distribution of risk and the insights of behavioural economics
- gain an understanding of the impact of regulation on economic growth, innovation, productivity and competition in the Australian context
- reflect upon your own professional experiences and discuss examples from your own work environments
