These frequently asked questions have been designed to assist agencies prepare for the commencement of the Australian Public Service Commissioner's Directions 2016.
When do the new Directions start?
The Australian Public Service Commissioner's Directions 2016 are scheduled to commence on 1 December 2016.
Has the definition of merit-based selection changed?
The legislative requirements to uphold merit have not changed. The duplication in minimum requirements for merit-based selection has been removed from the Directions. The Public Service Act 1999 still prohibits discrimination, patronage and favouritism.

What happens to incomplete recruitment processes on 1 December 2016?
Selection processes commenced prior to 1 December 2016 can be continued to completion.
In most cases, an agency can continue to fill vacancies in accordance with the Directions that applied at the time the vacancy was advertised.
The revised requirements to notify certain employment decisions will apply to completed selection processes after 1 December. Refer to I started a selection exercise under the 2013 Directions. Do I still need to notify an outcome?
