Minister announces Public Service Workplace Diversity Awards

The Hon Tony Abbott MP
Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Public Service

Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, Tony Abbott, has announced the winners of the Australian Public Service Workplace Diversity Awards at a ceremony at Old Parliament House in Canberra today.

The annual awards highlight Commonwealth agency initiatives to promote excellence and professionalism by eliminating discrimination and disadvantage in the workplace. There are three award categories: open, regional and small agency. This year 23 entries were received.

"I want to congratulate all entrants," Mr Abbott said. "Their entries show how the Australian Public Service is making the best use of the talents of its people."

In the open category, Customs and the Centrelink Multilingual Call Centre, received commendations. The Defence department won the open category for its Equity and Diversity Programme - From Policy to Practice.

This year, judges decided to combine the small agency and regional categories. In this category, ATSIC and AQIS received commendations for their programmes. Centrelink's Latrobe Call Centre took out the award for its development of a manual to assist the integration and recruitment of staff with visual impairment.

The awards, co-sponsored by the Public Service and Merit Protection Commission and the Institute of Public Administration are open to all agencies covered by the Public Service Act 1999.
