Networking events and seminars

These events and seminars provide an opportunity to network with colleagues and hear and interact with leading speakers on contemporary issues and challenges that are relevant to the Australian Public Service.

Graduate events series

The Commission’s 2014 Graduate Event Series is an excellent avenue for APS graduates to build their knowledge of current Australian Public Service (APS) issues and establish strong networks amongst their graduate colleagues from other departments and agencies.

The four events in the series provide valuable insight into the APS and its senior managers in a developmental, interactive and entertaining manner.

A Taste of Government

A Taste of Government is an engaging and informative event held annually at the start of a graduate year. It provides an excellent opportunity for graduates to hear the perspectives of two prominent and experienced senior public servants. The event also includes an opening address by Senator the Hon. Eric Abetz, Minister Assisting the Prime Minister on the Public Service. Graduates will gain a valuable insight into the workings of the APS and how it operates in relation to Ministers, Government and in a policy setting. There will be opportunities for graduates to raise questions with the speakers directly from the floor and establish networks with other APS graduates.

The Great APS Graduate Debate

The Great APS Graduate Debate is a lively event, bringing together two teams of five highly talented graduates to debate a topical APS issue. This event provides an opportunity for graduates to represent their agency in a whole-of-government event. Debate auditions will be held between 11–14 March 2014 only. Agencies can select up to four graduates to take part in the audition process with the top ten to represent the 2014 APS graduate cadre live on stage. Adam Spencer will be back by popular demand to MC the event.

Q&A—The APS Panel Discussion

The APS Panel Discussion provides an opportunity for graduates to engage with a range of speakers from the public and private sector who will provide diverse perspectives on a topic relevant to the current APS operating environment. This event is aimed at motivating and inspiring graduates as they transition through their career in the APS.

Candid Reflections from Inspiring APS Leaders

Candid Reflections from Inspiring APS Leaders is a panel-style interview session, where four inspirational Senior Executive Service (SES) leaders share their journeys from their introduction to the APS as graduates to their current roles in the SES. These SES leaders will discuss their experiences on a range of topics including leadership styles, challenges they have faced and lessons learnt, use of mentors, building capability, networking and the expectations of today’s graduates. Virginia Haussegger will return as the interviewer for this event.
