Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander development programmes
The Australian Public Service Commission (the Commission) is working towards improving the number of Indigenous Australians working in the Australian Public Service (APS) and their prospects for career development. The Commission offers a range of development programmes for Indigenous employees in the APS.

Indigenous APS careers-a workshop for Indigenous APS 1- 4 employees
Participants in this workshop will experience opportunities to develop skills applicable to the workplace. They will gain increased awareness of career possibilities in the Australian Public Service, consider their own personal development options and career maps, and have the opportunity to develop strategies to achieve their professional dream.
Driving your career-a workshop for Indigenous APS 5-6 employees
This two-day workshop gives participants the opportunities to consider their career directions, increase awareness of working effectively in a whole-of-government environment and explores strategies to overcome barriers to job performance and career progression unique to Indigenous employees in the APS.
Career Trek
Indigenous Career Trek delivers a range of learning and development opportunities to support career development and advancement for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees at all levels in the Australian Public Service.
Career Trek was designed to enhance access to career development opportunities for regionally based staff and those employed by small to medium sized agencies, as well as expanding opportunities for staff based in Canberra and other capital cities.
Career Trek also offers the following.
- A range of scholarships to build leadership capability and support career advancement for Indigenous employees at the APS 6 to senior executive levels.
- Horizons an APS secondment scholarship for APS 3 – APS 6 levels.
- Free development workshops in all capital cities and select regional centres in the following skills areas confident communication, influencing skills.

Indigenous Career Trek 2008-
APS Career Management Workshop
This programme will give you a chance to clarify your personal and professional goals and provide you with tools and information to plan your next career move. You will be able to work with, and learn from, other APS Indigenous employees who have been able to overcome obstacles and achieve goals in their professional and personal lives
New Programmes
Confident Communication Skills for Indigenous APS 1-4 employees
This two-day workshop covers all aspects of communication. You will learn how to present at interviews, to teams and ‘off the cuff’. You will also be given tools to help structure and develop your presentations and how to boost your confidence. Click here for a programme outline and registration form.
Influencing Skills for Indigenous APS 5-EL 1 employees
As a participant in this two-day workshop you will be given tools to increase your capacity to influence across all levels, stakeholder groups and organisational boundaries. You will be shown the elements of influence and leadership in the APS and how best to implement these elements. Click here for a programme outline and registration form.
Scholarships
The Indigenous Scholarship Programme is designed to broaden the level of expertise and career progression opportunities for Indigenous employees in the APS through a number of different scholarships.

Programmes and events available in your State or Territory
While the Australian Public Service Commission national office is in Canberra, our programmes are accessible to the many employees located outside of Canberra through our regional offices.
We have regional offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. APS agencies in the Northern Territory and Tasmania are served from the Adelaide and Melbourne offices.
