What a career in the APS can offer you

Working for the Australian Public Service provides you with many advantages and opportunities, some of which have been listed below…

Diversity

The Australian Public Service (APS) has one of the most diverse workforces in the country due to its long standing commitment to the recruitment of Australian citizens from all cultural backgrounds and walks of life. We value and encourage supportive workplace environments based on fair and equitable treatment. How we work and treat each other is governed by the APS Values and Code of Conduct.

Job satisfaction

APS employees report high levels of job satisfaction, particularly in relation to flexibility and good working relationships with their colleagues. The 2005-06 State of the Service report, which draws on surveys of APS employees, found high levels of job satisfaction across the Service. The vast majority of employees (81%) would recommend their agency as a good place to work and a similar number of employees (79%) were found to be proud to work for the APS.

Variety

As an APS employee, you could use your skills to design and develop policies, implement and manage government programmes, deliver services to the public, be a legal, financial or public affairs professional, work in human resources or corporate support, and the list goes on.

Opportunity

The APS is made up of over 100 agencies. Agencies such as Customs; Centrelink; Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs; the Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts; the National Gallery of Australia,; the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service - and many more - with office locations right across the country - not just in Canberra. In fact almost two-thirds of APS employees are located outside of the Australian Capital Territory.

Development

APS agencies offer their staff outstanding learning and development opportunities. In addition to formal training, there is the opportunity to move between agencies to broaden your skills and perspectives and to challenge your self in various fields.

Salaries

The APS offers extremely competitive salaries and other remuneration benefits such as paid long service leave. Each of the agencies has its own pay scale structure linked to performance.

Fantastic conditions

APS agencies offer employees exceptional working conditions and encourage their employees to achieve a good work/life balance. This may include accessing the benefits of part time work, working from home, cultural leave, maternity, paternity and adoption leave, access to flex time working hours, job sharing arrangements and Christmas closedowns just to mention a few.
