I am currently the Manager of the Indigenous Coordination Centre (ICC) Tamworth, coordinating Australian Government programme delivery and service provision to Indigenous communities in the Tamworth region. I am part of a leadership team providing flexible innovative solutions in partnership with Indigenous people.
Prior to joining the APS, I developed a pathway in the field of Indigenous affairs through the public sector. I worked for 24 years in the NSW public service and in this time completed various professional courses to enhance my educational level as well as ‘in-house’ training.
I have worked in three human service areas: Aboriginal health; education at university and TAFE NSW; and in state housing. This provided me with a platform to gain a firm understanding of issues affecting Aboriginal people, and the Government interventions that address these issues.
I want to shape my career further by challenging myself to strive for other positions within the APS and to be selected on my merit. I attended an Executive Leadership Programme and was the only Indigenous participant there. It was challenging to be part of an executive level workshop. This inspired me to demonstrate that Indigenous APS staff can be competitive and on an equal footing, and it encouraged me to provide positive exposure of Aboriginal people at that workshop.
