Indigenous Career Ambassadors

Jason OrchardMr Jason Orchard

Australian Taxation Office

“ Manage your career; don’t wait for someone else to do it for you ”

I am the Indigenous liaison officer with the Australian Taxation Office, and my role is to assist the Tax Office implement, coordinate and review our Indigenous employment and development strategy nationally. My position enjoys a high level of autonomy and I also have the opportunity to help shape strategic thinking. I consistently communicate with influence at all levels of the organisation.

I began my public service career as an APS1 in the Department of Social Security in Beenleigh Queensland. I worked for seven years between Beenleigh and our sub-office, in Beaudesert. Working in a small country town office I quickly learnt to use my initiative and manage people and expectations.

In 1998 I transferred to an inner city Brisbane office and worked as a Disability Officer and later as the Indigenous Services Manager. In 2003 I accepted a six month secondment offer with Centrelink’s National Office and thus began a broader career in the public service, in a variety of roles that has eventually landed me in my current role in the Australian Taxation Office. In Canberra I began a new journey.

In early February 2007 I received formal recognition for ‘outstanding contribution and fostering a sense of identity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees in the Tax Office and the wider community’ in the form of an Australia Day Award presented by the Commissioner of Taxation.
