Indigenous Career Ambassadors

Matt NichollsMr Matt Nicholls

Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations

“Rise up to meet challenges, take good counsel, seek assistance and guidance when and where necessary, learn from past experiences and don’t let failure be a deterrent to taking up new opportunities ”

I am the Manager of the Indigenous Employment Programmes (IEP) Unit in the Victorian Office of the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR). The IEP unit works to improve the economic independence of Indigenous communities and individuals through training and employment opportunities in the broader mainstream business sector and assists Indigenous community businesses to become self sufficient.

I enjoy my role because I know that what I’m doing is making changes in the community by providing opportunities to assist the economic development of communities and individuals. Being in a position where I can influence, support and provide direction to Government departments, Indigenous communities and individuals gives me satisfaction and personal rewards. It provides me with goals to aim for, it’s challenging and it’s dynamic in nature; there is constant change.

I’ve worked with a diverse range of people in many different areas, including the community sector, and have had a variety of roles and responsibilities all of which have contributed to my development within the public service. My overseas travel has also allowed me to broaden my outlook on life and to be more accepting of life’s situations.

I don’t believe that any one incident or experience has inspired me to work in the area I’m now involved in. It’s more likely that my overall life experiences have allowed me to observe and experience things. When opportunities have emerged which seemed to coincide with my areas of interest I took up those opportunities. They further consolidated where my interests lay and ultimately opened up more opportunities for me.
