Indigenous traineeship opportunities

Applications for the Indigenous Entry Level Recruitment Programme (IERLP) have now closed.

The Indigenous Entry Level Recruitment Programme (IELRP) is a 12 month programme designed to prepare participants for a career with the Australian Public Service (APS)  and increase the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians employed in the APS.

What the IERLP offers

The Indigenous Entry level Programme offers participants;

Who should apply?

Anyone from school leavers to the mature aged are encouraged to apply. Prior experience or qualifications are not required although reasonable computer skills are an advantage.

Positions in the IERLP are not typically for people with university qualifications; the Australian Public Service Commission (APSC) runs an Indigenous Graduate Programme for these candidates.  Further information about the APSC Graduate programme can be found on our Indigenous graduate & cadetship opportunities page.

The Programme

The IERLP supports a combination of work and formal training resulting in a nationally recognised qualification at completion of the year long programme.

The IERLP provides an opportunity for you to join the APS at an entry level and learn new skills that will contribute to your development and a career in the APS.

Apprentices will be employed by individual agencies, and will be subject to their employing agency’s conditions of employment.

Location

Positions may be available through the IERLP across Australia, however they depend on where positions are located in each employing agency at the time.   Applicants should be aware the majority of positions are usually in Canberra.

Selection process

Once applications have closed, applications will be assessed against the selection criteria in the application.  Applications will then be short listed with short listed applicants invited to attend an assessment centre.

What is an assessment centre?

An assessment centre is a combination of an interview and other assessment techniques that test written and numeracy skills and may include a group activity. Assessment centres are designed to give you the best chance to demonstrate your skills and abilities to the panel.

More information on the assessment centre process will be provided if you are invited to attend.

Job offers

Once the assessment centres have finished, candidates will be placed on an order of merit which will be used by employing agencies to select candidates for further interviews.  An order of merit is a list of candidates who have been assessed as suitable to work in the APS.

Once agencies have interviewed candidates, offers may be made. These will be based on the number of positions available and the suitability of the candidate.

Applications

Applications for the 2008 Indigenous Entry Level Recruitment Programme have closed.  Information about the 2009 programme will be available shortly.
