Australian Public Service Commission

Welcome

The Australian Public Service Commission promotes good practice in managing people, supports leadership and learning and development in the Australian Public Service (APS), fosters ethical behaviour and workplaces that value diversity.

We also have an important evaluation role in working with agencies to ensure that the APS is performing effectively and consistently with the APS Values.

Connections: insights from the front line
The Commission is pleased to offer a new leadership and talent development opportunity for Senior Executive Band 3 officers of the Australian Public Service to strengthen connections between policy development and service delivery.

Connections enables Senior Executive Band 3 officers to gain experience in a front-line agency directly serving Australian citizens. Candidates will experience first hand the challenges and complexities of service delivery.

Participation in the program by senior policy makers and advisers will enable them to gain a better understanding of citizens’ experiences and needs, and develop improved policy–service delivery connections. This will assist in ensuring that citizens are considered paramount when agencies develop and plan the implementation of government policies, programs and services.

Indigenous graduate program
Looking for a great way to transition your studies into a career?  The APS has a range of positions available for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have recently or will have completed an undergraduate degree by February 2011. This means that you can apply if you are scheduled to complete your degree by February 2011, or if you completed your degree in the past 3-5 years.

APS Employment and Capability Strategy for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Employees
Since August 2005, the APS Employment and Capability Strategy for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Employees (the Strategy) has contributed to the stabilisation of Indigenous employment levels in the APS, as well as to the Government’s wider agenda of employment and equity outcomes for Indigenous Australians. In the 2009 Budget, the Australian Government committed to funding the strategy for another three years to June 2012.

The Commission has now reviewed and revised the Strategy in the context of the Council of Australian Governments’ (COAG’s) National Partnership Agreement on Indigenous Economic Participation to ensure that it continues to:

  • meet the expectations of the Government’s ‘closing the gap’ agenda
  • respond to the needs of Indigenous APS employees and their managers, as well as APS agencies’ business

Evaluation of APS recruitment advertising - Find out what sources of advertising work.
The Commission, in consultation with the Department of Finance and Deregulation, is conducting an evaluation of recruitment advertising.  Of particular interest is to gain an understanding of how and where potential employees become aware of vacant APS positions, and to consider how effective the various advertising sources are at providing the best candidates.
