The Australian Public Service, like any large workforce, is constantly changing.

The 2016-17 APS Statistical Bulletin records the APS at 30 June 2017. The analysis contained in the Bulletin also highlights a number of changes in the APS over the last 10 years.

The more noteworthy changes are:

  • The APS employment headcount was 152,095. APS numbers peaked at 167,331 in 2012.
  • Part time workers represent 16% of the APS workforce. The figure was 12% in 2007.
  • Employees at the lower APS 1-3 levels accounted for 17% of the APS workforce. The figure was 24% in 2007.
  • Staff aged over 50 years represented 32% of the APS workforce. The figure was 25% in 2007.
  • Women are 59% of the APS workforce. The figure was 57% in 2007.
  • 38% of APS employees are located in the ACT, 19% in NSW and 17% in Victoria.

The data presented in the Bulletin is sourced from the APS Employment Database (APSED), which was established in 1966. This year 95 agencies provided the APSC with a snapshot of all their employees, including demographics, classifications, diversity data and geographical location.

Key results from this release will be used to inform the annual State of the Service Report, which will be presented to Parliament in late November.
