Statement from the Hon John Lloyd PSM
An agency breakdown of the representation of Indigenous Australians in the public sector workforce has been published by the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.
I congratulate Australian Public Service agencies on their achievement in increasing the representation of Indigenous Australians in the public sector workforce.
The APS workforce should reflect the diversity of the community it serves.
At 30 June 2016, the rate of indigenous employment in the APS was 2.9 per cent, a 0.1 per cent increase from last year.
The APS accounts for almost half of the Commonwealth public sector. The Commonwealth public sector has been set a target of 3 per cent indigenous representation by 2018.
More work needs to be done. However, I congratulate agencies on the work they are doing to recruit and develop the capability of Indigenous Australians.
